Liberalism: An Ideology Defined

Liberalism is an ideology based on increasing freedom to all members of society. The rights of individuals should be protected by the government and all people should be treated equally and consistently under the law. The government shall be governed with the consent of the people with the belief that people are naturally good and with accurate information will vote for what is right.

Liberals extend freedoms to all people equally who conduct themselves lawfully concerning other people’s rights. This comes from the basic belief that people can do whatever they want as long as it does not harm other people’s ability to do whatever they want. Liberals fight against discrimination based on ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, beliefs, and any other qualities that don’t explicitly cause harm. Anyone can promote their views, no matter how different they are, as long as they don’t make targeted attacks against private people.

Liberals don’t adhere to traditions strictly nor follow a set of dogmatic views. Progressive ideas and flexibility are qualities that are ingrained into liberalism. The power of reason and the power of empathy allow humanity to find a system that allows the maximum amount happiness to largest amount of people. The power of reason allows people to look at this world and understand how it works so we can make things we want. The power of empathy allows people to understand other people’s feelings and strong empathy makes people feel compassion for others. Between those two powers, liberals shall promote policies that are good for society based on the best information available.
